  • Arc-rated versions to IEC 61482
  • Inherent FR or treated cotton

Flame-retardant overalls are made to resist ignition and to stop burning when the heat source is removed. Refineries, chemical plants, foundries and electrical teams need them. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us the hazard, sizes and quantity. We pass your request to independent PPE suppliers and manufacturers, who quote you directly. We do not sell the overalls ourselves. There is no charge and no obligation to accept a quote, so you can compare certified options.

How flame-retardant clothing works

Flame-retardant (FR) cloth either has the protection built into the fibre, or a chemical treatment applied to cotton. When exposed to flame it chars instead of melting or burning on, which limits burns to the wearer.

  • Inherent FR fibres: protection is part of the yarn and cannot wash out.
  • Treated cotton: comfortable and common, but wash instructions must be followed.
  • Fire and acid finishes: added to resist splashes and chemical contact.

Standards to look for

In South Africa, flame-resistant clothing is tested to SANS 434 and the international EN ISO 11612 standard for heat and flame. Chemical splash protection may be tested to SANS 50530 or EN 13034, and anti-static properties to EN 1149. Electrical arc protection is measured under IEC 61482, and anyone near arc-flash risk needs arc-rated garments. Ordinary flame-retardant overalls are not automatically arc-rated.

Ask the supplier to state exactly which standard and which codes each garment meets, and to provide test certificates. A garment that is only rated for flame may be useless against acid, and the reverse also holds. Match the garment to your risk assessment.

Care, fit and layering

Protection depends on correct care. Wash FR garments as the maker instructs. Fabric softeners, bleach and some detergents can reduce performance. Repair tears with FR thread and patches, and replace worn or contaminated suits.

Wear natural or FR underwear. Synthetic layers can melt onto skin. A good fit matters too: loose garments trap an air gap that adds protection, but sleeves and legs that drag are a trip hazard. Reflective tape and hi-vis panels must also be flame-resistant, so confirm that when you order. Tell the supplier if your site requires a specific colour or a plain navy suit with silver tape. Some plants also require a visible label showing the standard and wash limit, so ask for it.

What affects the quote

We do not quote prices here, because each order differs. Cost depends on the fabric and its standard, the fibre type, extra acid or arc ratings, style, hi-vis tape, the size range and the quantity. State whether you need one-piece or two-piece suits and whether they must carry a company logo. Give the delivery address and your timeline. For site access, some clients ask for a test certificate with each batch, so mention that in your request. Ask suppliers how many washes a garment will keep its rating, and whether they can supply a laundering guide for your cleaning contractor.

Comparing flame-retardant overalls quotes

PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
  • Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
  • Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
  • Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • Describe the hazard: flame, molten metal, acid, static or electrical arc.
  • Name the standards your site requires, such as SANS 434 or IEC 61482.
  • Choose one-piece or two-piece suits and the colour.
  • List sizes and quantities, with tall and plus sizes shown.
  • Say if you need test certificates, FR reflective tape or logos.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell flame-retardant overalls?
No. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent suppliers and manufacturers across South Africa, and they quote you directly. There is no fee and no obligation to accept any quote.
Are flame-retardant overalls the same as arc-flash suits?
No. Flame-retardant overalls resist ignition and burning. Arc-flash suits are tested under IEC 61482 to withstand the heat energy of an electrical arc. Tell suppliers if you work near live equipment so that you get arc-rated garments.
Do flame-retardant overalls lose protection when washed?
Garments with fibres that are flame-resistant by design keep their protection through washing. Treated cotton keeps it too, if you follow the maker's care instructions. Avoid bleach and fabric softener, and ask how many washes the garment is rated for.
Can I get fire and acid resistant overalls together?
Yes. Some fabrics carry both a flame-retardant and an acid-repellent finish. Say which chemicals and what concentrations your staff meet, and ask the supplier for the matching test standards and certificates before you place an order.
