Welding PPE protects against arc light, sparks, spatter, heat and fumes. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what your workshop or site needs and where, and we pass your request to independent PPE suppliers, welding supply stores and wholesalers who quote you directly. We do not sell PPE ourselves. There is no charge and no obligation to accept a quote. Compare offers on the same specification and choose the supplier that suits your welders. Mention soldering or brazing too, if your team does it.
What a welder wears
A welder is exposed to intense light, hot metal and fumes at the same time. The usual kit is:
- Welding helmet with a filter lens, passive or auto-darkening, matched to the process and current.
- Welding gloves: long leather gauntlets, thicker for stick (MMA) and thinner for TIG.
- Leather apron, sleeves and spats for overhead and heavy work.
- Flame-resistant overalls to SANS 434 or EN ISO 11612, buttoned to the neck, with no oil or grease.
- Safety boots with covered laces, and safety glasses under the helmet.
Helmets, shades and gloves
The filter lens shade depends on the process and the amperage. Higher current needs a darker shade. An auto-darkening helmet switches shade at the arc, so the welder does not flip the helmet up and down, which reduces neck strain and missed starts. Check the lens meets the relevant standard and tell the supplier the processes you use.
Gloves matter more than most buyers expect. Leather welding gloves must resist heat and spatter yet leave enough feel for the work. Tell suppliers whether welders work in tight spaces, overhead or on thin material. They can then suggest the right cuff length and thickness. Grinders working beside welders also need a face shield, not only glasses.
Fumes, soldering and brazing
Welding fume is a health hazard, and so are the fumes from soldering and brazing. Soldering flux fumes can irritate the lungs and trigger asthma. Fumes from galvanised steel and stainless steel are especially harmful. Local exhaust ventilation comes first, but PPE fills the gap. Ask about welding-rated respirators or powered air systems and an FFP2 or FFP3 disposable respirator for lighter work.
Soldering at a bench also needs safety glasses, heat-resistant gloves and an apron against hot solder splashes. Tell suppliers whether you solder electronics, plumbing or sheet metal, since each calls for different protection.
What affects the quote
We do not quote prices here. Cost depends on the number of welders, the helmet type, glove grade, flame-resistant clothing, respiratory protection, branding and delivery. Say whether you want a starter kit for each welder or only replacement gloves and lenses. State the welding processes, the materials and whether welders work indoors, outdoors or in confined spaces. Include your site address and any date you need the kit by. Suppliers can then offer matching lenses, spare cover plates and gloves in the same order.
Comparing welding PPE quotes
PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
- Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
- Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
- Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.
What to include in your request
- State the welding or soldering processes you use.
- List the number of welders and glove sizes.
- Say whether you want auto-darkening or fixed-shade helmets.
- Mention fume risks such as galvanised or stainless steel.
- Include the delivery address and date needed.
