- SANS 1397 industrial helmets
- HDPE, ABS or polycarbonate shells
- Ratchet suspension, 4 to 8 point
- Vented or unvented, full brim or cap
- Optional chin strap and logo print
Buying hard hats means matching the helmet to the hazard, the head size and the site rules. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what you need and where, and we pass your request to independent PPE suppliers, wholesalers and branding shops who quote you directly. We do not sell hard hats ourselves. There is no charge and no obligation to accept a quote. Compare several offers on the same specification, including colours, chin straps and logos, and choose the supplier that suits your site.
What a hard hat protects against
An industrial hard hat has a rigid shell and an internal harness. The shell deflects falling objects. The harness spreads the force and keeps a gap between the shell and the skull.
- Impact: falling tools, bricks and loose rock.
- Penetration: sharp objects dropping from height.
- Electrical: some shells resist brief contact with live conductors.
- Heat and flame: useful near furnaces and foundries.
Industrial helmets are covered by SANS 1397, and some models need NRCS approval. Ask each supplier for the test certificate.
Shells, suspensions and accessories
Most shells are HDPE, ABS or polycarbonate. HDPE is tough and common on large issues. ABS and polycarbonate are lighter and often chosen for hot work. A full-brim helmet shades the face and neck on open sites, while a cap-style helmet suits tight spaces.
Look at the suspension too. A ratchet adjuster is quick to fit to different heads, and four, six or eight-point harnesses change comfort and stability. Vented shells run cooler but are not for electrical work. Underground crews need a cap-lamp bracket and cable clip. Anyone working at height should have a chin strap that releases under load. Add sweatbands, neck shades or earmuff attachments if your people need them.
Colours, markings and care
Hard hat colours are a site convention, not a national rule. Many sites use white for managers, yellow for general workers and other colours for visitors, electricians or safety officers. Agree your scheme and tell the supplier before ordering.
Hats can carry a printed company logo, a name panel or reflective strips. Keep stickers and paint away from the shell unless the manufacturer allows them, since solvents can weaken plastic.
- Check the date stamp inside the shell.
- Replace any hat that has taken a hard knock, even if it looks fine.
- Replace cracked or faded shells and worn harnesses.
What affects the quote
We do not give prices here, because every order differs. These factors move the quote: quantity, shell material, vented or unvented, suspension type, chin straps, colours, logo printing, certification papers, delivery address and lead time. Say whether you need spare harnesses and sweatbands as well. For branded hats, include your artwork or a clear description of the logo and where it should go. Suppliers can then tell you what the setup involves and how long printing takes. Ask for hats on the same specification from each supplier so you can compare like with like.
Comparing hard hats quotes
PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
- Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
- Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
- Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.
What to include in your request
- How many hard hats you need and in which colours.
- Full brim or cap style, vented or unvented.
- Whether you need chin straps, lamp brackets or earmuff slots.
- Logo artwork and where it should be printed.
- Your delivery address and the date you need them.
