Buying ear plugs and earmuffs means working out how loud the area is and how much attenuation your people need. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us what you need and where, and we pass your request to independent PPE suppliers and wholesalers who quote you directly. We do not sell hearing protection ourselves. There is no charge and no obligation to accept a quote. Compare offers on the same specification and choose the supplier that suits your noise zones.

Why hearing protection matters

Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and builds up slowly. Under the Noise-Induced Hearing Loss regulations and the OHS Act, employers must control noise, and hearing protection is the last line of defence once engineering controls have been tried. Many sites mark zones where noise reaches 85 dB(A) over a working day.

Hearing protectors are tested to SANS 50352 or the matching EN standard. The test gives an SNR figure, the single-number reduction in decibels. A higher SNR is not always better. Over-protection cuts out speech and warning alarms, so match the product to the noise level.

Ear plugs, earmuffs and banded caps

  • Foam ear plugs: roll and insert, then expand to seal. Good value for large issues and good attenuation when fitted well.
  • Pre-moulded plugs: reusable, washable, often on a cord. Suited to people moving in and out of noisy areas.
  • Earmuffs: cups on a headband, easy to put on and see worn. Some clip onto hard hats.
  • Banded plugs: light, quick to hang round the neck when not in use.

Earmuffs suit short, intermittent exposure. Plugs suit hot, long shifts. Very loud areas often need both together. Electronic muffs let people hear speech and cut loud impact noise.

Fit, comfort and care

Hearing protection only works if it is worn properly all shift. A badly rolled plug or a muff with a hair or glasses arm under the seal can lose much of its protection.

Train staff to fit plugs and check muff seals. Offer more than one type so people can find what is comfortable. Spectacle wearers do better with soft, thin seals. Hard hat users can use muffs that clip onto the helmet.

Replace foam plugs often, wash reusable plugs and replace cracked or hardened muff cushions. Keep dispensers at entrances to noisy areas so nobody enters without protection. Audiometric testing records help show whether your programme is working.

What affects the quote

We do not give prices here. Quotes depend on the type, SNR rating, corded or uncorded, colour, dispensers, quantity, delivery and lead time. Tell suppliers the noise level or the machinery involved, and the number of staff in each noise zone. Say whether people also wear hard hats, spectacles or respirators, because that changes which style works. Ask if replacement cushions and dispensers are available. For sites with a hearing conservation programme, say so, and ask suppliers whether they can help with training or fitting demonstrations.

Comparing ear plugs and earmuffs quotes

PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:

  • Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
  • Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
  • Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
  • Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.

What to include in your request

  • The noise level or the machines in each zone.
  • Plugs, muffs or both, and how many of each.
  • Whether staff also wear hard hats, glasses or respirators.
  • Corded or uncorded plugs, and any dispensers you need.
  • Your delivery address and the date you need them.

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell ear plugs or earmuffs?
No. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service. We pass your request to independent PPE suppliers and wholesalers across South Africa. They quote you directly and supply the hearing protection. There is no fee and no obligation to accept any quote.
Which is better, ear plugs or earmuffs?
Neither is always better. Plugs are comfortable in heat and under hard hats. Muffs are quick to fit and easy to supervise. Very noisy areas often need both. Choose by noise level, task, comfort and how often people enter the zone.
What does the SNR number mean?
SNR is a single-number rating in decibels from standard tests. It shows how much a protector can reduce noise. Real protection is usually lower than the label, so allow a margin, and avoid cutting out speech or alarms with too high a rating.
At what noise level must employees wear hearing protection?
Most sites mark zones where noise reaches 85 dB(A) over a shift as areas where protection is required. A noise survey tells you the actual levels. Ask a qualified occupational hygienist, then tell suppliers the readings when you request quotes.
