Overalls cover and protect the body in dirty, hot or hazardous work, and they give a team a clear identity. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us the style, fabric, sizes and quantity you need. We pass your request to independent PPE suppliers, manufacturers and workwear stores, who quote you directly. We do not sell overalls ourselves. There is no charge and no obligation to accept a quote, so you can compare offers and choose the supplier that suits your workforce.
Styles of work overalls
Overalls come in a few common styles, and each suits different work.
- One-piece boiler suits: a single garment with a front zip. They give full coverage and suit fitters, painters and mechanics.
- Two-piece suits: a jacket and trousers, often called conti suits. They are easier to size, and a worn part can be replaced alone.
- Bib-and-brace: trousers with a chest bib, worn over a shirt or jacket.
- Dustcoats and lab coats: light cover for warehouses, laboratories and visitors.
Fabric, colour and features
Most overalls are made of cotton, polyester or a blend. Cotton breathes and feels soft. Polycotton lasts longer and keeps its colour. Fabric weight, measured in grams per square metre, sets how heavy and hot the garment feels. Lighter cloth suits summer, heavier cloth suits cold stores and rough work.
Look at the details: double-stitched seams, reinforced knees, tool pockets, elasticated waists, and zips that do not snag. Hi-vis versions use fluorescent orange or lime-yellow panels with silver reflective tape, made to SANS 1137 or EN ISO 20471 where roadside, mining or traffic work needs visibility. Dark colours hide oil and grease, while light colours suit clean areas and show dirt. Many buyers add embroidered or printed company marks, which also helps staff and security tell crews apart on a large site.
Overalls as PPE
Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the General Safety Regulations, the employer must provide the protective clothing a job requires, free of charge. Ordinary cotton overalls give basic cover. They do not protect against flame, acid or arc flash. For those hazards, ask for certified garments, such as flame-retardant overalls, acid-resistant suits or disposable coveralls. Ask suppliers to state clearly which standard a garment meets, and to supply wash and care instructions, because some finishes lose protection if washed incorrectly. Plan for replacement, since overalls wear out and shrink. Many employers issue two or three sets per person, so one set can be washed while another is worn, and they record each issue in a PPE register.
What affects the quote
We do not quote prices here, because each order differs. Cost depends on style, fabric type and weight, colour, hi-vis panels, special finishes, the size range and the quantity. Branding adds embroidery or printing, so say if you need a logo and where it sits. Give a size list, including tall, short and plus sizes. State the delivery address and your deadline. For new starters, ask whether the supplier can hold stock of your sizes and reorder in small batches when staff join.
Comparing overalls quotes
PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
- Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
- Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
- Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.
What to include in your request
- Choose the style: one-piece, two-piece conti suit or bib-and-brace.
- State the fabric type, weight and colour you prefer.
- Say if you need hi-vis panels, reflective tape or a flame-retardant finish.
- Give a size list, including tall, short and plus sizes.
- Add logo details if you want embroidery or printing.
