Wet work still has to be done safely. A good rain suit keeps workers dry, warm and visible in storms and on wash-down jobs. PPESuppliers.co.za is a free quote-request service for South Africa. Tell us the material, the conditions and the numbers you need, and we pass your request to independent PPE suppliers, wholesalers and workwear shops, who quote you directly. We do not sell rain suits ourselves. There is no charge for the service and no obligation to accept a quote.
Types of rain suit
Rain suits are made from a waterproof coating on a fabric base. The coating decides durability, flexibility and price.
- PVC two-piece: a jacket and trousers, light and cost-effective, the most common type.
- Rubberised suits: a heavier, tougher coating that survives rough handling and repeated use.
- Polyurethane suits: softer and more flexible, with better comfort over long shifts.
- Reflective rain suits: fluorescent fabric with silver tape, for roads and night work.
- One-piece rain overalls: full cover for wet, dirty jobs.
Features that matter
Welded or taped seams stop water creeping through stitching holes. A fixed or rollaway hood and an adjustable face opening keep rain off the neck. Long jacket tails and trousers with elastic or drawstring waists give full cover. Press studs or a storm flap over the zip keep the front sealed.
Waterproof fabric does not breathe, so workers sweat inside. Suits with underarm vents or a lighter coating cope better in humid KwaZulu-Natal or Lowveld summers. Check the size run too: a suit should fit over work clothes and a jacket, so ask for sizing generous enough to move and bend. A suit that tears or restricts movement is a hazard on its own. Ask the supplier about seam strength and fabric weight.
Visibility, standards and care
If staff work near traffic or machinery, choose a fluorescent colour with silver tape that meets SANS 1137 or EN ISO 20471. Yellow and orange suits are easy to see against grey skies and wet roads. Plain green and navy suits suit farm and garden work where visibility is less critical.
Rinse mud and chemicals off after use and hang the suit to dry in the shade. Sunlight, heat and sharp edges crack PVC over time. Replace any suit with split seams, cracked coating or damaged tape. Keep a few spare sizes at the store so no one has to work wet.
What affects the quote
We do not give prices. Suppliers price on coating material, fabric weight, seam type, number of pieces, reflective tape, colour, size range and any printing. Tell them how many suits you need, the type of work and the weather conditions. Say whether you want hi-vis certification. Add your logo and placement if you want branding, plus your delivery address and the date you need stock. If you issue rain suits to seasonal staff, mention the headcount and size spread so the supplier can plan a sensible stock range.
Comparing rain suits quotes
PPE prices move with fabric, leather and rubber costs, the exchange rate and stock levels. When quotes arrive, check:
- Exact item and standard: the product, the standard or rating it is certified to, and an NRCS letter of authority where one is required.
- Sizes and quantities: price per unit or per pack, size runs available and any minimum order.
- Stock or lead time: ex stock, or imported or made to order, and how long that takes.
- Delivery and VAT: delivery to site, branding costs, whether VAT is included and how long the price holds.
What to include in your request
- Say whether you want PVC, rubberised or polyurethane.
- Describe the work and weather the suits face.
- State if reflective tape or certification is needed.
- Give the quantity and the size split.
- Add your logo, delivery address and date needed.
